Before wandering out of the city, there are many places to enjoy within San Cristóbal: The Museo de Los Altos, Museo Textil and Sna Jolobil store with exquisite textiles, Museo Mesoamericano del Jade, Museo del Cacao, Amber Museum, craft market, fresh food market, the collection of textiles and instruments gathered over the years by humanitarian Sergio Castro, the archeological and ethnological museum and library at Na-Bolom, the cathedral and Santo Domingo baroque church, the botanical gardens of Orquideas Moxviquil, the law school with its handsome murals, Taller Leñateros where beautiful hand-made paper products are created, restaurants and coffee houses, bars, and street vendors. There are daily yoga classes, nightly dance classes, spas and places to meditate.  Two doors from La Joya Hotel is the language school Instituto Jovel, and other schools are within walking distance.

There are also special festivities during the year. Easter Week includes the re-enactment of the Stations of the Cross. Papier-mâché “Judases” that each make a political statement are blasted and burned to embers on Easter Saturday night. On Sunday there is an Easter parade that goes right by La Joya Hotel. Easter heralds the Feria de la Primavera. In July we welcome the Festival de Jazz Las Casas, and in late October Las Casas Cervantino Baroque Festival.
